Lara Kramer is a Canadian dancer and artist. She is Oji-Cree from South Western Ontario near London and she closely links her work to memory, examining issues of social, political, cultural importance for Canada and First Nations Peoples. You can find a great interview with her archived on local cable, MATV. I am also from that area of Ontario but the white community I come from had a very ambivalant relationship to First Nations and still does. A lot of it is an unspoken two solitudes sort of thing like it is across this country. She is a single mother now living in Montreal and an active participant in the local dance community. I know another dancer living here who comes from Vancouver who is also now a single mother. It is a really tough life economically for them and I am blown away by the irreverence for the status quo and passion for life they display in their works. Here is a video short of a piece Kramer did on the metro here back in 2011 that illustrates what I am talking about.
