You may already know that the Canadian actor Douglas Rains did the voice of the advanced computer named Hal in Stanley Kubricks, 2001 Space Odyssey.
The New York Times pulbished an article yesterday with some background info on how the director came to use Rains for this voice part. Of particular interest are the characteristics of Rains voice and his accent which were felt to embody and dramatise the essence of an android point man with a detached yet articulate and polite tone.
That his voice is Canadian and is a generic example from the white anglo middle class is amusing in retrospect.
I also found a charming interview on YouTube where Rains at age 86 talked about his life after Hal doing voice work on Hollywood trailers.
