Celebrated Canadian Author Madeleine Thein defends Steven Galloway

“I  believe you have failed everyone involved. I know that if we want a world where women are believed, we must support them to give their evidence without fear or reprisals, in a context in which their identity can be protected and guaranteed by the law, in a system that is transparent and just.” Madeleine Thein. This quote was directed at UBC’s administration and is taken from an article in the Globe last year concerning the firing of her friend, writer Steven Galloway, from his job as tenured professor over allegaitons of sexual misconduct.

This past summer Galloway’s primary accuser, Caralea Cole, had a solo exhibition in New York City. The exhibition description published for the show titled, Illuminated Manuscript, states in part that the artists work, “derives from what Cole refers to as her Rape Narrative, a narrative (and term) sanctioned by a univerity after she disclosed being sexually harassed, assaulted and abused by a professor.”  Galloway is now suing Cole and  others over the continued spread of sexual harassment claims.

  1. On Facebook, Mr. Galloway referred to “bedroom role play” and later in the thread (which includes responses from Ms. Rooney) wrote: “This whole photo is what would happen if Wes Anderson made an adult film.” Ms. Rooney told the investigator she found the comments “very inappropriate and embarrassing” particularly coming from her partner’s boss – and in a public venue.

In response to this complaint, Ms. Boyd wrote: “While [Mr. Galloway’s] posting may be inappropriate, I am unable, in this context, to characterize [Ms. Rooney’s] allegations of harassment as anything other than a gross over-reaction.”

Really glad I got out the game when I did. Anything can mean anything. People who are prone to being upset have got all kinds of venues and opportunity to manifest this unhappiness. What destructive, self-destructive waste.

Meanwhile back at the ranch in Concordia’s English dept. as of 2019 things are going nowhere fast in addressing female students complaints….

‘Student leaders had hoped the report would go further — for example, encouraging Concordia to adopt rules to stop professors from routinely trying to date their students.

“They didn’t recommend consequences for professors who repeatedly proposition students,” said Marty-Dugas. “If they proposition a student and the student rejects them, they don’t have to report that. That means that professors who have repeatedly treated the classes they teach as dating opportunities” go unchecked and unreported.

“It’s a problem, because part of the reason students feel like they can’t say no to a professor’s proposition is because they are responsible for their grade. So I think that needs to be changed.”
